Beef and Broccoli for Your Dog!
Ordering in Chinese just became extended to your 4 legged family members!
Well its not actually like take out Chinese food but I swear your dog won’t know.... in fact he’ll thank you! Lets get started!
Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees. Cut acorn squash in half and scoop out all of the seeds. This, in part forms the good carbs, that will balance out this meal! Pour a inch worth of water in the bottom of a baking dish and place the squash cut side down. This will steam/bake your squash within 20-25 minutes. You’ll know its done when the skin pushes down easily when you press!
Now lets talk cost to do this every week. I wasn't too sure how the cost would break down every week as I prepped up these meals. The truth is the “amount” of individual meals I get out of a recipe depends a lot on what's in it! An oatmeal or brown rice carb base really bulks up the overall volume which is good; and I get more meals out of it. My other trick is really taking advantage of my stores usual schedule for marking down items about the expire. For me it seems to be Thursday and Friday that I see that magical 30% off sticker! 🥰 The meat still typically has a day or two left in the best before, which is not a problem if I plan to meal prep this within that time... as you have seen before, I air seal each portion individually and then freeze them. Its also win win that organ meat is so much cheaper than ground beef; when purchasing for my 3rd child. As you can see I found 2 $8 packs of lean ground beef for 30% off and the liver was $4.44!!!
In this case I used Organic Broccoli but I dont always... I just had it.... and the acorn squash was maybe $2... so all in, all contributors to this meal were reasonable for the 7 meals I made with it. I will also note if you are creating these dishes yourself... caloric intake for dogs depends on age, size and even breed! I highly recommend talking to your vet before starting making food for your dog... when armed with information you simply need to tweak ratios of Protein/Carbs and Fibre and consider the other vitamin and mineral requirements your dog needs. But... in relation to cost and serving size... you may end up with several more portions than I did based on your dog!
Next pan fry the beef liver with water and a pooch safe oil like Safflower or coconut oil. Dogs really benefit from having a variety of body part meats rather than just muscle meat, so I try and adopt at least one organ to every recipe I make.
I also sauté the beef in a frying pan, while boiling up the broccoli. When settled together... It’s almost pretty isn’t it? But who am I kidding... your pup doesnt care about looks... its how it tastes and it ain’t kibble so good for you!
mix well...
And package for freezing....
What I love the most about doing this is over time... The variety my dog eats is amazing... I have a whole line up of dishes I will share with you!! Stay tuned and tell me what your dogs likes to eat? Is there anything you’ve considered throwing in their bowl but don’t know what to pair it with to make it balanced? Let me know!! Let's do it together!!
