I love just about anything pork belly... It's probably not great for me given the fat content, but I swear I only eat it as a treat.... and how can you not? Look at them....
These were actually my favourite with the honey! I really felt it added a sticky goodness to the final product. Lets get started. In a bowl I mixed up equal portions of soy sauce and rice vinegar, probably about 1/4 cup each. I added 3 Tbps of hoisin sauce 3 Tbsp of sesame oil and a very generous dump of minced garlic paste. You can use minced garlic too, or fresh, I would not sub in powder for this dish. I added about 3 Tbps of sugar to the marinade and 1/3 cup of melted honey and stirred well. You'll have to adjust the amounts based on the amount of meat to cover obviously... this was a small batch, but as you see later on, I wasted some good sauce to the pan. This could have easily marinated double or three times the portion.
I cut my pork belly into small cubes after removing the skin. You want bite sized pieces and try for uniform size so they all cook at the same pace.
I placed the pork belly into the marinade and tossed well, including some red chili flakes for some heat.
I spread them out on a baking dish and placed them in a 400 degree oven for about 20 minutes... but watch these they do cook fast at this heat. I will some times line my dish with tin foil because your sauce will burn onto the pan, but this in some ways creates a bit of the caramelization ... you can get it scrubbed of eventually with some pre soaking... today I was eager to get them cooking and didn't.... you'll see next my clean up nightmare! I blame the honey... and well soy sauce burns too! But look at the amazing crispiness of the bites... so good!
I plated these out two ways as appies! they could easily go along side some rice and veggies for a dinner, but these are seriously good for a party! Hope you give them a try!!!
The Recipe:
equal portions of soy sauce and rice vinegar, probably about 1/4 cup each.
Added 3 Tbsp of hoisin sauce;
3 Tbsp of sesame oil; and
a very generous dump of minced garlic paste. You can use minced garlic too, or fresh, I would not sub in powder for this dish.
3 Tbps of sugar to the marinade; and
1/3 cup of melted honey.
Marinade the pork in the mix for at least 30 minutes at room temp... you don't want the honey to thicken again.
Pre heat the oven to 400 degrees and cook on a lined baking sheet for 20 minutes... start watching it closely at about 15 minutes. Ensure you have hit internal temp for pork before serving them.
