How to Make Use of Your Dogs Post-Dog Park Coma!

Salmon Brown Rice, Cauli and blueberry dog food

I love to spend my weekends sourcing out new and fun off leash dog parks for Finnegan. Socialization is so important for puppies so they are neither scare nor a maniac when encountering other dogs. Finnegan is a touch on the maniac side as he truly believes all dogs want to wrestle him... he's a social work in progress! #doglife #dogparks

But then we met his twin!! and the love of wrestling became a consensual agreement to tucker each other out.. so cute!

How to spend the "dog coma" quiet time?

Its no secret my love of healthy food has become projected on my dog! Once I decided that I would be making homemade food for my dog, I committed to creating one new freezable meal a week; to allow for some variety and a balanced and varied source of nutrition. I read a lot about feeding dogs human food and the one theme I resonated with was that, not all meals are equal and it was the overall nutrition over the course of the week that mattered. When you think about it; that statement is true for human's as well. When I think of meals I "didn't" manage to force into my kids, I was thankful that over the course of a week there was some vegetables, protein and nutrients that entered their systems.

So after Finnegan assumed his Coma position... I got to work on the Salmon, Brown Rice, Cauli and Blueberry meal for him. Because he is a puppy he eats roughly double the calories of an adult dog. His nutrient ratio should be roughly 50% Carbohydrates which is inclusive of 3 to 4% fibre. It should include 25% protein and no less than 10% fats for my breed's size and needs. Again I am not a nutritionist nor a vet so I do recommend anyone considering meal planning for their dog talk to their Vet or do research of their own.

So I cooked the brown rice on the stove and poached the pink salmon in water in a covered frying pan as well. Both were shredded together and mixed well. Next I cooked the cauliflower florets and put them in my Ninja food processor to blend.

The best part of making dog food out of human food in a household of picky kids, is my ability to find a relevant purpose for the "fugly" fruits and veggies in my house that my kids take one look at and refuse to eat... like this guy..... who will find a new home in my dogs stomach instead of the food scraps bin after a failed attempt as a recess snack for one of my girls.

I popped this little fella in the Ninja after ensuring the core and seeds were removed (they are bad for dogs) #ninja #apples

It all mixed up to a nice moist consistency! I added some blueberries which is an excellent form of antioxidants for dogs and created a relatively balanced meal.

I air seal pack each portion and label so that each evening I can pull out a new variety of foods for Finnegan. This particular blend created 6 portions and will keep in the freezer for 4-6 months.

The Recipe:

4 small fillets of pink salmon

1 cup brown rice

1 1/2 cups cauliflower florets

1 apple

1/2 cup of whole blueberries.

Place the 1 cup brown rice in 2 cups of water and a table spoon of safflower oil. Place in a microwave safe covered dish for 20 minutes.

At the same time poach the salmon in water on the stove and in a separate pot boil the cauliflower until tender.

Fork shred the salmon into the rice until it appears as a small well blended consistency.

Place the cauliflower and apple in a food processor like the Ninja until fully blended and mix with the salmon and rice. In the fridge this will last 3 days thus its recommended to package for freezing.
